Laser Therapy for Toenail Fungus Removal

There are many traditional treatments for nail fungus including oral and topical anti-fungal treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments such as oral medications and topical creams, often don’t work.

Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a fungal infection that causes the nails to grow thick, discolored and brittle.

Toes are particularly susceptible to nail fungal infections since shoes create a warm, moist environment that is ideal for fungal growth. Nail fungus is not just a cosmetic problem as it can cause painful ingrown toenails due to deformity of the nail plate as a result of the fungal penetration. It can also cause bacterial infection due to physical trauma to the surrounding toes from the large, thick nail plate. Finally, it can cause pain from shoe pressure due to the thickness of the nail.

If you have struggled through toenail fungus infection, you know that they can be really hard to get rid of.

Laser treatment is the most effective way to treat your toenail fungus, and it provides a great alternative to prescription medications. The newest method of laser therapy treats nail fungus by heating and killing the fungal colonies in and underneath the nail.

Dr. Raginsky, DPM and his staff use LightPod Forte Nd: YAG 1064nm laser from Aerolase which is presently a gold-standard technology for fungus treatment due to its unique high power output, efficacy and fast treatment speed.

Unlike toenail removal surgeries, laser nail fungus removal is a relatively fast procedure that requires no drugs or anesthesia.

The laser used to rid your nails of the infection emits pulses of energy that heat up the affected cells in the nail bed to kill the fungus at its source. The treatment only takes about 20 minutes and is painless, so anesthesia and numbing are not required. There are also no side effects currently associated with laser therapy.

How Can You Get Rid of Toenail Fungus?

What is toenail fungus?

It is a living organism that thrives in dark, damp environments such as under and around nails. The fungus organism and its spores are very common in air and soil around the world. An infection with nail fungus may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. Approximately 25 million Americans have some form of onychomycosis (toenail fungus).

How do I avoid Toenail Fungus?

Prevention is the best cure
Wear pure 100% cotton, wool, or silk socks
Keep your feet dry
Wear sandals, water shoes, or swimming shoes in public pool areas

What is the best cure for toenail fungus?
The best known cure for toenail fungus is laser.

How does the laser treatment work?
The laser therapy works by using a specific wavelength laser light that passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue. The laser light is absorbed by pigment in the fungi, which causes it to heat and kill or damage the fungal organism. This results in your nail growing out normally.

Footcare in US

Proper foot care is crucial for everyone. Unfortunately, if your feet are not taken care of properly, foot problems can develop quickly.

There are a variety of foot problems that can take place as a result of improper foot care, and even the most ordinary problem can become worse and eventually lead to more serious complications.

Check your feet regularly, or have a member of your family check them.  Look for red spots, cuts, swelling, infected toe nails, sores, and blisters. This is important because you could have foot problems without  foot pain.

To avoid foot problems, keep your feet clean and wear comfortable shoes and socks at all times. Some people have one foot that is larger than the other.  Be sure to fit shoes to the larger foot.  Keep your feet warm, and take care of toenails and calluses.  Make sure that you are are fungus free.

Toenail fungus is a  painless condition of the toenail that occurs when a yeast-like fungus grows under and within the toenail. The fungus can cause the nail to become thick, discolored, or  loose or cause it to crumble.

Nail fungus can spread deep into a nail, causing the nail to discolor, thicken, and  look ugly.

Podiatrists and primary care doctors  are qualified to treat most foot problems. Visit a podiatrist on a regular basis.
